Access to the ERC Database

Access to the ERC database follows these general steps:

1. Submit a proposal for review by the ERC Advisory Board

Researchers work with UT Austin, UT Dallas, or University of Houston directors to submit a proposal. Requirements may differ slightly across sites. Proposals are reviewed on a quarterly basis and are typically approved for two years. Upcoming meeting dates can be found on the ‘Events and Notices’ section.

2. Complete paperwork and payment requirements

Researchers submit required paperwork, complete required training, submit project payment, and set up remote server access.

3. ERC access granted, research begins

Access is granted for datasets that were requested in the original proposal. Additional data and project extensions may be requested through the advisory board in subsequent meetings. The maximum timeline for projects is 5 years.

4. Review and conclusion of project

All research output is reviewed for compliance with FERPA. Policy briefs are required by state mandate at the conclusion of the project.

About Us

The establishment of the three research centers began with legislation enacted in the 79th Texas legislative session. The legislation calls for greater public access to Public Education Information Management System [PEIMS] data, and the creation of an online clearinghouse of information on campus and district best practices relating to instruction, finance, resource allocation, and business practices. Tex. H.B. 1, 79th Leg, 3rd C.S. (2006).

Today, data made available through the Texas Education Research Centers contains de-identified, individual longitudinal data from 1990-present, making it possible to track students from prekindergarten through the workforce. The data documentation page of this site contains a list of datasets and variables available to researchers from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, as well as external links to documentation for TEA and TWC. The research repository page contains articles and policy briefs from approved and completed research projects.
