Overall Considerations with PEIMS Data

Overall Considerations with PEIMS Data

Data Information:

  • This list and its descriptions are not inclusive of each variable present in the data, and variables are also subject to change from year to year;

  • These data are compiled from annual PEIMS reporting - data is reported by schools/districts at differing time points during the year (fall, midyear, summer, extended year);

  • The data sets present are created from PEIMS reporting (they are not direct matches to the PEIMS reporting but data pulled into formats based off of the information received);

  • Currently files are pulled from Legacy PEIMS EDIT+ but is moving to improved reporting under TSDS PEIMS using Texas Education Data Standards (TEDS);

  • In some cases, the data files have an 'f' qualifier after the year - this means the data was collected in the fall only; In cases where there are files with and without an 'f' it means that there is both a fall collection and a corrected spring collection that represents AEIS and accountability numbers;

  • Code tables refer to a data set which identifies the meaning of codes used in a variable (i.e., a data set has the variable 'object' with codes ranging from 3000-8000, the code table describes what each number means);

  • There are many other code tables used in PEIMS data which we may not have been given access to depending on the year(s); code descriptions can usually be found online though.

Overall Considerations:

  • Please use this page to identify what data sets might be of use in your research question(s); your data request must match what was stated in your research proposal.

  • Please refer to PEIMS Data Standards (link below) as well as other reference tools to find the best fitting variables and data sets for your research question(s).

  • There are several files which are similar: two which cover courses for students and two which are the matching classroom employment records; consider carefully which of these you want to use if you need this data. Traditionally, p_class and p_course_complete are used unless you need to investigate the student-teacher link; the files p_stud_class enroll and p_teacher_class assign have been developed for closer investigation of the student-teacher link.
